You want to purchase magnetic paint.
There are so many magnetic paint options available, it is important that you choose the product that best fits your needs.
To do this, make sure to ask the right questions. Check out some of the things we think you need to consider before buying below.
Magnetic Paint Strength
Before you purchase Magnetic Paint, you will need to find out how much magnetic strength the product has. Depending on what you want to use your magnetic surface for, the strength you need may vary.
Some important questions to ask are:
- What magnetite content does this product have?
- What magnets can I use with this product?
Smart Magnetic Paint, just one of the products in Smarter Surfaces’ magnetic range, has a magnetite content of 50%. This means the product has a medium magnetic strength. If you are looking for something with a stronger magnetite content, we would suggest Smart Magnetic Plaster which has a magnetite content of 67%.
Smart Magnetic Paint cannot be used with regular fridge magnets. In order to benefit from using your magnetic surface, we recommend you use neodymium magnets. You can find these here.
Another thing to consider is how many coats of magnetic paint you will need to apply. Different products will have different tin sizes available and it is best to check to make sure you have enough paint, not only to cover your area, but also enough for the recommended amount of coats.
Questions to consider asking are:
- How many coats will I need to apply?
- Are all coats provided in the tin or will I need to purchase more?
- What tin sizes are available?
Smart Magnetic Paint is available in two tin sizes, 3m2 / 32ft2 and 10m2 / 107ft2. With both options we recommend you apply three coats of the product in order to transform your surface into a magnetic one. These three coats will be included in the tin you buy.
However, if you would like to increase the magnetic strength, you can apply up to seven coats of magnetic paint onto your area. Any further coats you want to apply will not be provided in your original tin so you might want to purchase an additional tin or tins.
Even though your surface will be for functional use, you might want to find out how the product will look before you apply it to your wall.
Questions to ask include:
- What colour will the magnetic paint be on my wall?
- Can I topcoat my magnetic surface in other colours?
- Can I topcoat my magnetic surface with additional functional products?
Smart Magnetic Paint will appear dark grey when applied onto your surface, however it is possible to top coat it. If you are top coating it in a colour of your choice, due to the dark grey colour of the magnetic paint, we would advise applying more than one coat.
Or you can choose to topcoat your surface with a digital print or wallcovering. We recommend you choose a thin product to go on top, as a thicker / deeper topcoat might affect magnetic performance.
Your third option is that you can topcoat your magnetic surface in Smart Wall Paint, our whiteboard paint, which would provide you with a magnetic and dry erase surface.
Want to choose a high quality magnetic product for your surface? Then make sure to ask the right questions.
