Our History

While working in the construction industry, our founder Ronan Clarke was approached by a client who wanted to cover an entire meeting room with traditional whiteboards. But the solution just didn’t work. It looked disjointed with unnecessary wasted space, and well, it also lacked the aesthetic appeal that corporate clients expect from a modern A Class office interior. That’s when Ronan had a better idea – what if you could write on the entire wall, seamlessly? And this is exactly how the idea for Smarter Surfaces was first born.

Over the next few years, Ronan dedicated himself to developing a new kind of whiteboard coating technology and with much trial and error and bumps along the road his efforts finally paid off in 2012 with the launch of Smart Wall Paint in 2012. This was our first whiteboard paint, but with its stellar performance and features, the word spread quickly, and the product took off. Soon, businesses, schools, and universities across the globe were able to experience the immense benefits of writable walls. Meeting rooms, offices, hallways, tables, desks, and doors witnessed complete transformation into collaborative and creative spaces.

Management Team

Ronan Clarke – Founder of Smarter Surfaces

Ronan is a seasoned entrepreneur whose journey began in construction and property investment, both in Ireland and internationally. Over the years, his focus has evolved to include research and development, product innovation and global sales, shaping him into a an industry leader in functional surfaces, coatings and wallcoverings.

His entrepreneurial spirit emerged early. In 1998, while still in school in his teenage years Ronan founded a construction company that grew into a multi-million-euro enterprise, employing over 50 people.
In 2011, he founded Smarter Surfaces, a company born from a simple yet powerful idea, that is to turn any surface into a space for creativity and collaboration.

Under his leadership, the Smarter Surfaces team has earned widespread recognition, winning prestigious accolades including the David Manley Business Award, PwC Innovation Award, Irish Exporters Association Exporter of the Year, and the Ulster Bank Business Achievers Award.

John Byrne – Financial Controller

John is a Chartered Accountant who trained with the leading international accountancy firm, Mazars.

With over 25 years of experience, he is a seasoned financial executive with a strong track record in business development and relationship management across a diverse array of sectors including transport, retail, manufacturing, and export.

John has successfully managed business operations with turnovers exceeding €30 million and teams of more than 50 staff, consistently delivering financial leadership and strategic growth.

Audiola Lumnica – Supply Chain & Operations Manager

Audiola holds a Bachelor's Degree in Business Studies and brings strong expertise in Supply Chain and Lean Management to her role.

With a service-focused mindset, she leads the Supply Chain and Operations Department, ensuring the seamless and efficient delivery of all logistics, operational, and supply chain activities. Her key focus areas include optimizing processes, enhancing customer service, and building strong, collaborative relationships with suppliers.

Sonia Bueno - Sales Manager

Sonia holds a Master’s Degree from DIT Dublin and brings strong expertise in sales strategy, business development and customer relationship management to the company.

As the leader of the Sales and Customer Service teams, Sonia is focused on driving revenue and ensuring we live up to our customer experience values. Sonia plays a central role across the wider team with her leadership being key to aligning the sales operations with the company’s strategic goals.

Continuing to grow our international distribution network is a key focus for Sonia through building relationships with our existing global partners and expanding our distributor network worldwide.
