To achieve the best finish, it is crucial to start with a smooth, even surface. Preparing the substrate properly will ensure optimal adhesion and durability of the black chalkboard finish.

For bare or untreated surfaces, we recommend applying a water-based primer prior to the black chalkboard paint. Our White Primer is specifically formulated and tested for compatibility with our Black Chalkboard Paint, guaranteeing superior performance.

Begin by applying the primer and allow it to dry fully. Then apply the first coat of Black Chalkboard Paint evenly. Once this initial layer has dried, typically within about two hours, proceed with the second coat for attaining a rich and durable finish.

After application, allow the painted surface to dry completely for 48 hours. Once dry, prepare the newly painted chalkboard surface by rubbing a piece of chalk evenly across the entire surface, then erase with a dry cloth or duster. This primes the surface for optimal chalk use.

Black chalkboard paint can be applied with either a roller or spray equipment. For a smooth, professional finish, we advise using a mohair, foam, or lint-free roller. The application process includes:

1. Priming any bare or uncoated surfaces.
2. Filling any imperfections and sanding the surface smooth.
3. Re-priming if necessary after sanding.
4. Applying two coats of black chalkboard paint, allowing the first coat to dry fully before applying the second.
5. Now wait for 48 hours before conditioning the surface with chalk as described above.

Priming is highly recommended. For uncoated or raw surfaces, apply two coats of a water-based primer, such as Smart White Primer, to ensure strong adhesion and a durable finish. On pre-painted or previously primed surfaces, black chalkboard paint can be applied directly.
