FAQ's
General Product Questions
What is clear whiteboard paint?
Clear whiteboard paint is a specialised paint that works with smooth surfaces, including painted walls, digital prints, and other non-absorbent surfaces such as wallpapers, converting them into useful whiteboards. Smarter Surfaces Clear whiteboard paint provides a dry-erase surface that allows for writing, drawing, and erasing with dry-erase markers, preserving the original surface design or colour.
Does clear whiteboard paint function effectively?
Yes, clear whiteboard paint, also referred to as dry erase clear paint, is specifically designed to provide a functional and durable writing surface. Smarter Surfaces clear whiteboard paint for walls creates a smooth, erasable surface that allows writing and erasing with dry-erase markers. Also, it is backed by a 10-year guarantee. Proper application is essential to achieving better performance.
Can an existing whiteboard be repainted with Clear Whiteboard Paint?
Yes, Clear Whiteboard Paint is an excellent solution for refurbishing most whiteboard surfaces. You can use it straight on an existing whiteboard as long as all marker stains have been completely cleaned off.
Can clear whiteboard paint be utilized as a projection screen?
While transparent Whiteboard Paint can function as a projection surface when used with short-throw projectors, it is not specifically built for this purpose. For enhanced projection quality, it is recommended to use one of the specialized projection screen solutions.
Application & Usage
What type of roller is recommended for applying Clear Whiteboard Paint?
Each Clear Whiteboard Paint kit includes a roller specifically designed for optimal application. For best results, it is suggested to use a mohair or lint-free short-pile roller sleeve. If a mohair roller is used, ensure that all loose fibres are removed before application.
Is it possible to apply transparent dry erase paint on wooden surfaces?
Yes, transparent dry erase paint can be applied to wood. However, the surface must be smooth before application. Any imperfections, such as holes, should be filled with an appropriate filler. Clear Primer should be applied before the Clear Whiteboard Paint. Each coat of primer should be sanded, and additional coats should be applied as necessary.
Can clear whiteboard paint be applied to glass?
You can apply Clear Whiteboard Paint directly to the glass.
Can clear whiteboard paint be applied over wallpaper?
Yes, clear whiteboard paint can be applied over wallpaper, provided that the wallpaper has a smooth surface. It is not recommended for use on textured wallpaper. For a white finish, two coats of Whiteboard Primer should be applied. If a clear finish is desired, two coats of Clear Primer are necessary, particularly if the wallpaper is porous.
Can clear whiteboard paint be applied to a floor surface?
Clear Whiteboard Paint is not tested for slip resistance. As with any painted surface, its durability may be affected by foot traffic. The performance guarantee is exclusively applicable to its standard function and does not extend to any other uses such as floors.
Can I apply clear whiteboard paint over coloured walls?
Our clear whiteboard paint is designed to be applied over colourful surfaces. We recommend painting full walls as if only a section of a wall is painted it may be noticeable as ambient light will reflect differently from the surface of the clear whiteboard paint when compared to coloured paint.
Not recommended for white and light colours with beige ,vanilla and similar tones.
Can I apply clear whiteboard paint over white walls?
We do not recommend Smarter Surfaces clear whiteboard paint over a brilliant white coloured paint as a slight yellowing effect can be caused by how light interacts with the white paint underneath the clear whiteboard, whilst this can be very mild almost unnoticeable in most cases, we recommend using the white whiteboard paint as it will give a brilliant white finish.
What type of heating device can accelerate the drying process of the primer? Is the use of an infrared lamp appropriate?
A standard fan heater is suitable for expediting the drying process of the primer. An infrared lamp may also be used; however, it should not be positioned too close to the surface to prevent potential adverse effects.
Will using Clear Whiteboard Paint result in reflections?
In some cases, a "hotspot" effect may be observed when using a projector. This issue can be resolved by adjusting the angle of the projector. For users requiring a high-performance projection surface, we recommend using one of Smarter Surfaces Projector Paint range. Those seeking a dual-purpose surface with both projector and whiteboard capabilities may find the Projector Whiteboard Wallpaper to be a suitable option.
Can Magnetic Paint be used as a base layer for a writable surface?
Yes, it is possible to use Magnetic Paint as a base layer. We recommend the Smarter Surfaces Super Magnetic Paint or Magnetic Plaster for this purpose. For a quicker installation that results in a magnetic and writable surface, Smarter Surfaces Magnetic Whiteboard Wallpaper is an ideal solution.
Surface Prep & Priming
Is clear whiteboard paint applicable to any surface?
Clear whiteboard paint applies to nearly every smooth surface, including metal, glass, concrete, and wood. When applying clear whiteboard paint over an already coloured surface, you do not need a primer. However, use the Smarter Surfaces clear primer if applied to an absorbent material such as natural wood or polished concrete. Clear whiteboard paint is applicable over any colour, except white. For a white finish use the white whiteboard paint.
Why should I use a primer before painting with clear whiteboard paint?
Only if it's an absorbent surface such as a natural wood or concrete. Typically the Clear Whiteboard Paint is applied to a painted colour and does not require a primer.
Cleaning & Maintenance
What is the best method for removing stains from a whiteboard?
To effectively remove stains from a large clear whiteboard, begin by using a dry erase eraser or a soft cloth with a chosen whiteboard cleaner. If stains persist, apply Permanent Ink Remover to the affected areas. This product is highly effective for removing stubborn marks but is not intended for daily cleaning.
Is it safe to use alcohol-based cleaning products on a Clear Whiteboard Paint surface?
The continuous application of alcohol-based cleaning agents may compromise the durability and effectiveness of the Clear Whiteboard Paint surface. To ensure both cleanliness and longevity, it is advisable to use cleaning products specifically formulated for this surface. A full range of suitable cleaning products is available for optimal maintenance.
Can permanent markers be used on a Clear Whiteboard Paint surface?
No, similar to traditional whiteboards, Clear Whiteboard Paint surfaces are not designed for use with permanent markers. If a permanent marker is mistakenly applied, it is recommended to use Smarter Surfaces Permanent Ink Remover to eliminate the markings effectively.
